Week 3

This week we spent a lot of time, measuring and re measuring the space where the big doors would be on the front face of the shed. We worked out that we could put 4 sections of plywood that we sourced (which were each roughly 4ft) together and cut them to the size of the front face and then cut the door frames out of that with a jigsaw to create some doors flush with the doorframe. We made the reluctant decision not to make  swing out side walls, as the mechano wood and knuckle structure would bow under the weight. We also decided to inset panels of CNC offcuts left over from cutting out the knuckles.  I got started on making the doors and door frame. It proved very difficult to find a section of the CNC panels that were even and square.

Shed Some Light Project: Miniature Scale Models Week 2

We were given the challenge of each making a scale model of what our Sheds could look like that wold fit in a lip balm tin. These are the models some of my team made. I tried to make mine so that it folded as a kit that can be assembled.

From left to right: Abbie’s teeny tiny shed model, my foldable Model, Abraham’s Laser cut Model, Courtney’s model with fold out side walls and front doors to expand space.

Shed Some light Project: Mood Boards Week 2

Ideas for the building structure, materials and shape as well as ideas for the interior.

We discussed the kinds of artist that could use this shed and agreed to focus the studio to an installation artist/painter.We decided we wanted the shed to be adaptable. We explored ways that we could increase the space of the shed so that it could be used to exhibit installations and paintings as well as being a work space.  We settled on designing a structure made primarily of plywood, as we thought an artist studio should have rigid walls in order to hang paintings and shelves and that the shed should have a sort of hinged method of opening out it in conjunction with Tyvek awning to expand the space.

Shed Some Light project: Week 1

  • We spent the day 1 identifying what an artist would need from a studio

– light, storage,  work surfaces, adaptability.

  • We decided to narrow the brief and make the studio for an Artist geared towards installations and painting.
  • We want the space to be flexible for use as an exhibition space as well as a work space. We drew up some ideas for shapes of the shed where the space could be expandable with fold out doors or tent structures in order to achieve this.
  • We made a mood boards for the interior and the structure of the building. We looked at modular and fold out storage for adaptability and maximization of space.
